Year 2000: Career Beginnings

DJ Brian joined Munghana Lonene FM while pursuing journalism studies at Technikon Pretoria (now Tshwane University of Technology). He began as a stand-in presenter, covering weekend and graveyard shifts, which allowed him to refine his skills while completing his education. In 2021, he successfully completed a Music Business Short Course at Boston College.

2000–2003: Rise to Prominence

DJ Brian gained recognition by hosting the African World Music Show, Mindhzumba ya Afrika, where he introduced listeners to a variety of African music from SADC countries and beyond. His innovative approach earned him the Presenter of the Year award at just 23 years old, a notable achievement for weekend program hosts at the station.

2003–2005: Afternoon Drive

During this time, DJ Brian Rikhotso hosted the afternoon drive show “Vaxumi,” captivating audiences with his dynamic presenting style and expanding his listener base. He later co-hosted the afternoon show Mphensa-Mphensa with Thembi Thobela, further strengthening his influence during prime-time slots.

2008–2012, 2015: Breakfast Show

He co-hosted the breakfast show “Phaphama” alongside Sydney Baloyi, becoming a household name. His return to “Phaphama” in 2015 solidified his popularity even further.

2018: Midday Show

DJ Brian took over the midday show “Dzumba na Mina,” showcasing his versatility. He created the feature “Hi Dzumba na vakhale,” which became one of the biggest segments on the show, profiling Xitsonga legends of our time.

At 23, he was the first presenter at Munghana Lonene FM to win Best Presenter of the Year (2003) for his weekend programs.
Other accolades include Best DJ of the Year (2003, 2008), Best Show for Mindhzumba ya Afrika (2015), Most Followed Presenter on Social Media (2015), and a Station Manager’s Award (2005).
He also received the Best Innovative Team award for the Afternoon Drive Show, Mphensa- Mphensa (2013). He now host Munghana Lonene FM’s Breakfast show Phaphama, as of 2025.
