Johannesburg , President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to address the nation on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at 19:00, following damning allegations of corruption and political interference within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
The address comes after KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi held a dramatic press briefing on July 6, where he accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and senior SAPS leadership of obstructing investigations, disbanding elite units, and interfering in politically sensitive cases.
Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed the national address, stating that the president will provide clarity on the matter and outline the government’s planned response.
“These are serious allegations that strike at the heart of the country’s criminal justice system,” said Magwenya. “The president is taking the matter seriously and will speak directly to the nation on the steps being considered to uphold accountability and protect the integrity of law enforcement institutions.”
The briefing by Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi has sparked public outrage, with calls from civil society and opposition parties for an independent inquiry into the claims. The disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team in particular has raised concerns about the state’s ability to deal with politically motivated crimes in KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.
Ramaphosa’s address will be broadcast live on national television, radio stations, and digital platforms.
