Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) has issued an alert as severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are expected to hit parts of Gauteng. The warning follows a Level 2 advisory from the South African Weather Service, with authorities cautioning that the conditions could lead to flash flooding in low-lying areas.
EMS spokespersons say disaster management teams have been activated across all seven regions of the city to monitor flood-prone zones, including river streams where water levels are expected to rise rapidly. The aquatic rescue unit is also on standby.
Motorists have been urged to drive with extreme caution, keep headlights on, reduce speed and maintain a safe following distance. Officials are strongly advising residents not to attempt crossing flooded roads, low-lying bridges or swollen rivers.
The public has also been warned about the risks of lightning, hail and strong winds accompanying the storm system. EMS is advising people to avoid metal structures, power lines and isolated trees during lightning activity.
City authorities are calling on communities in informal settlements and flood-risk areas to remain alert and to report emergencies on 011 375 5911 as conditions intensify.
