Johannesburg residents are facing yet another financial strain as electricity tariffs are set to increase from 1 July 2025. The City of Johannesburg has approved a tariff hike of 12.72%, in line with the recent NERSA (National Energy Regulator of South Africa) approval.

This means households and businesses will need to adjust their budgets, with many already battling high living costs, fuel hikes, and rising interest rates. The City has defended the increase, citing the need to cover operational costs and infrastructure maintenance.

Consumer groups and residents have expressed concern over the impact of the increase on lower-income households, calling for more transparency in municipal spending and urgent investment in sustainable energy solutions.
