Johannesburg – 13 July 2025

South Africa’s Minister of Police, Senzo Mchunu, has formally requested to be placed on special leave by President Cyril Ramaphosa, amid growing political and public pressure over a series of damning allegations.

The request comes in the wake of serious claims made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who accused Mchunu of interfering in investigations into political assassinations and working in coordination with criminal networks. Mchunu has denied all wrongdoing.

According to sources close to the Presidency, the embattled minister submitted the request in a letter over the weekend, citing the need to “protect the integrity of the office” and to “allow ongoing investigations to proceed without interference.”
