50th Anniversary Press Release
Celebrating 50th years with style
Birthdays come and go, get celebrated and quickly forgotten but 50 years of existence, 50 years of quality broadcast, 50 years of entertainment, of education and information is a long way and definitely a BIG deal.
Join us as we celebrate the BIG 50 in style. February 2015 marks half a century of existence for Munghana Lonene fm since its inception in February 1965 and as we celebrate this milestone, we take stock of the highlights that saw this brand grow from strength to strength.
Having gone through various transitions amongst others; name change, corporate identity change, station managers and even moved offices from the city of gold Johannesburg to the then Pietersburg (now Polokwane) in the Northern Province (now Limpopo Province), it is amazing that the brand is still the most consumed radio station among the xiTsonga speaking and understanding people. Amongst other outstanding transitions was when the station was broadcast on medium wave from Pietersburg (now Polokwane) in February 1984, and on 1 May of the same year, coverage being extended to listeners in Soweto via a low power FM transmitter atop the SABC building at Auckland park. In 1977, the station relocated to Polokwane, Limpopo Province. Satellite offices were also launched in Giyani and Thulamahashi in 1973 and 1982 respectively. In 1996, the station’s name changed from Radio Tsonga to Munghana Lonene fm.
The station will kick-off the month long celebrations with a Jazz & Fusion session in Jembe Tarven, Meropa Casino on Sunday 01st February. A prayer session and cutting of cake will follow on Monday 02nd at the SABC Polokwane foyer. On 14th February the celebrations will be taken out to the people – our listeners, as we stage a massive OB at Chiawelo - Xikhumba in the Greater Giyani Municipality. This will be followed by the station showing generosity to the Ntuli family in Mashamba village by handing over a house, making it house number 16 that the station build and donated to yet another destitute family. The station will then stage a staff excellence awards on Thursday 26th February at Meropa Casino and Entertainment where the cream of this powerful radio brand is going to be honoured in 28 different categories for their hard work and dedication. The station has also invited its retired presenters to be part of this historic milestone at the gala dinner on the 26th February. On the 27th and 28th February, all roads will lead to Phalaborwa for the annual Marula festival which the station does in partnership with Limpopo Provincial Department of Economic Development, Environmental and Tourism.
The celebrations will continue until end of year 2015. The main celebration will happen during the course of the year with a BIG wave of change. Listeners will be informed about this change in due course.
“The station’s main objective is to serve our people with diligence and commitment as we inform entertain and educate them.
