Munghana Lonene FM & Phalaphala FM 53rd Birthday simulcast

Munghana Lonene FM & Phalaphala FM listeners woke up to a rare treat on the morning of the 1st February 2018. In launching their 53 years in the broadcasting industry, the two stations, both of whom went live on air for the first time in 1965, had an amalgamated broadcast of their morning drive shows Phaphama and Vhandilani.

In what appeared to be nostalgic of their early years, when the two used to share one studio down Commissioner street in Johannesburg, DJ Brian and Mpho Nefale as well as Terry the Big Dude, as well as sports anchors Rhandzu and Chitagong were sharing the Munghana Lonene fm studio this morning, with Sydney Baloyi completing the cast from Radio Park.

It was a feisty and turbo charged affair, historical as well, and from the tweets and many phone calls that were coming in listeners were loving it, with some even asking for one more hour of this joint broadcast. Mopani Executive Mayor Cllr. Nkakareng Rakgwale sent a tweet and expressed her appreciation for what the two stations had done, remarking that she hoped this will go a long way in reuniting the Vatsonga and Vhavenda speaking people, the majority of whom were intermingled, until in the 60’s when the apartheid regime dislodged them.

SABC Limpopo PGM Ms. Tshamaano Makuya also made a turn for a live interview.

The two stations have several more activities that are aimed at celebrating their birthday jointly.
